Description
The Tiffen Glimmerglass 1/8 is a subtle diffusion filter for 82mm lens threads. It softens skin texture and adds a gentle sparkle to highlights, without a heavy drop in overall sharpness. Grade 1/8 sits at the lightest end of the Glimmerglass range, so the effect stays understated on screen.
How the Effect Works
Tiffen builds the filter with ColorCore technology. The company laminates the diffusion layer between two pieces of optical glass. It then grinds the sandwich flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000 inch. As a result, the filter holds colour and contrast accurately while it softens fine detail.
Highlights and practical lights pick up a soft halo. The diffusion layer scatters light at the brightest points of the frame. Meanwhile, midtones and shadows stay comparatively clean. This keeps the image readable instead of hazy, which matters on a monitor full of faces and set detail.
Built for Daily Production Use
The filter uses a glass element in an aluminium ring. As a result, it stands up to repeated mounting and unmounting on set. Tiffen does not apply a separate coating to this filter. At 2.5 mm thick, with an 8 mm ring, it adds negligible bulk to a matte box or clip-on holder.
The 82mm thread fits directly onto lenses with that front diameter. For example, many cinema primes and large-format zooms use 82mm or step up to it with an adapter ring.
When to Pull This Grade
Grade 1/8 suits interviews, beauty work and narrative close-ups. You get a touch of glow without losing skin texture entirely. It also helps on night exteriors with practical lights in frame, because it adds a gentle glimmer around each source. Because the effect is light, you can leave it on through a wider lighting range than a heavier grade allows.
Productions stepping up from a bare lens often start testing diffusion at this grade before committing to something stronger.
