Description
The Sony FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G is a full-frame wide-angle zoom built around a power zoom mechanism rather than a manual ring alone. It suits shoot days where smooth, repeatable zoom moves matter more than raw aperture speed, such as run-and-gun documentary work, gimbal setups, and solo-operator video shoots.
Power zoom built for video
Four XD Linear Motors drive the zoom mechanism, giving operators smooth control with up to eight selectable speeds from the zoom lever or a compatible camera’s custom keys. As a result, zoom moves stay consistent take after take, which matters when a client is watching playback for a clean reframe. Two further XD Linear Motors handle autofocus, keeping focus pulls quiet and fast without adding noise to on-camera audio.
The lens also suppresses focus breathing through Sony’s Smooth Motion Optics design, so focus changes don’t visibly shift the frame. That keeps handheld and rack-focus shots looking clean without needing a follow-focus rig.
Compact enough for one-person crews
At 353g and with a constant f/4 aperture across the zoom range, the lens stays light on gimbals and handheld rigs, so exposure doesn’t shift when reframing between wide and mid shots. Dust- and moisture-resistant construction, plus a fluorine-coated front element, means it can be used outdoors on location without extra precautions for a typical shoot day.
Who this suits on set
- Solo shooters and small crews needing smooth, repeatable zoom moves on a gimbal or handheld rig
- Documentary and interview setups where a wide-to-normal range covers most coverage needs
- Productions pairing a Sony full-frame body’s in-body stabilisation with a lightweight zoom
